Carr Hill High School pupils triumphed at the Lancashire Evening Post Education Awards taking home the award for Best Performing Arts student and Best Science/Engineering student. Two further awards were given to students who were highly commended in the Sports Award category.

The annual evening celebrates the achievements of students from primary and secondary schools across Lancashire. Carr Hill students faced competition from some of the most talented pupils across the region but were recognised for their dedication, hardwork and accomplishments.

Year 13 Eliza was awarded the Best Performing Arts Awards, whilst Year 11 Tom was given the title of Best Science/Engineering student. Year 10’s Alice and Ben were also highly commended in the Sports category.

Performing Arts teacher Miss Sheffield, who nominated Eliza, said: “I’m thrilled Eliza has won this award. Eliza is leaving us this summer after seven years at Carr Hill and in that time she has contributed so much to the Performing Arts Faculty. She deserves recognition for all she has given to the school community and I hope this award goes some way to showing her our appreciation.”

Tom was nominated by his Engineering teacher Mrs Dandy. She said: “Congratulations Tom. You have worked incredibly hard in engineering lessons and have been a pleasure to teach. I know you have a bright future ahead of you and I wish you all the best with your BAE apprenticeship.”

Mr Doughty, who teaches PE, nominated Alice and Ben. Mr Doughty said: “Alice and Ben have shown a huge commitment to their respective sports (Alice gymnastics and Ben rugby) and that is reflected in their many achievements. Well done to you both!”

Snippets from the award nominations:

Eliza

Eliza runs a drama club to boost the confidence of younger students in school and leads the school’s Dance Academy rehearsals. Her contribution to school and the performing arts is something I have never experienced before from a Performing Arts student. She recently visited Blackpool Tower Dungeons with the school and performed in place of one of the actors – at the end of her performance she was offered a job on the spot to work with Merlin Entertainments. Eliza is the only student who has ever been offered this opportunity. She is an asset to the school and I’m sure she will fulfil her dream of attending Drama school next year.

Tom

Tom is a keen engineering student with a bright future in the industry ahead of him. Tom has been studying for his GCSE in engineering for the last two years and his commitment to the subject has been rewarded with a much sought after apprenticeship with BAE Systems. Tom has worked consistently hard throughout his GCSE  course and shows a natural curiosity and talent for the subject.

Alice

Alice is a talented gymnast who has recently had success at the Open Apparatus Championship and Group seeding event. Alice was part of a small group who performed with all four as part of a British Squad selection event. She performed beautifully with difficult routines to win Gold medals in hoop and clubs and a silver in ball. Alice is now ranked 1 in Great Britain in the Juniors. This is Alice's final year as a Junior before moving to seniors in January. Alice has previously achieved a bronze medal at the 2017 British Championships and Silver and Bronze at the 2017 English Championships. Alice’s aim is to take the British title in June and gain a place on both the English and British squads. Her ultimate goal is to compete at the Commonwealth Games in 2022.

Ben

Ben is a talented rugby player who is currently the captain of Preston Grasshoppers U15s, whom he has played for since U12s. Last season he was awarded ‘Players’ Player of the Year’ and in his first full season he was awarded the ‘Coaches’ Most Improved Player’. He is also a registered member of WRU Welsh Exiles. He attended a training camp for the Exiles in  February and has since been selected to attend a further camp in Brecon at the beginning of May.
