The course took place in Wittering and Thomas spent five days with other students working on elements of support to a Humanitarian Aid operation in a far off country. Thomas learnt to understand the importance of budgets for materials and food and developed designs to calculate the financial implication of any decisions made.

The course enabled Thomas to gain valuable employment skills, such as communication, time management, problem solving, planning and presentations. At the end of the week Thomas was awarded the British Science CREST Award and an Industrial Cadet Award both of which are viewed favourably amongst universities and employers.

Thomas said:“I found out about the RAF STEM week through Scouts and I thought it was a great opportunity. The thing I enjoyed most throughout the week was speaking to RAF and other staff and finding out more about their jobs. I think the week also taught me a lot of new skills which will be useful in the future."
