Lancashire County Council have teamed up with the North West Ambulance Service and BBC Radio Lancashire to offer Lancashire residents the opportunity to learn skills which could save a life.

It’s a shocking statistic that fewer than 1 in 10 people who have a cardiac arrest outside of hospital in the UK survive, however with some simple training the initiative hopes to play its part in increasing the survival rate in Lancashire.

The sessions are free, only take an hour and are being held in locations around the county until the 12th May.

Carr Hill’s Business Manager Mrs Childs attended the course over the weekend after seeing it advertised on the internet. She said, “I used to be a trained first aider, but recently started thinking about whether I would be able to respond appropriately to an emergency situation if required.  I saw the course being advertised online and signed up.  It was less than an hour, but I left feeling like I’d be able to potentially save a life if it came to it. We were taught how to do chest compressions until an ambulance arrives and the paramedics take over. Although it sounds daunting it is actually very simple and those minutes between going into cardiac arrest and the ambulance arriving are vital in giving the patient the best chance of survival.”

The training is open to everyone over the age of 11 although those under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Mrs Childs added, “I would absolutely encourage everyone to take an hour out of their schedules to learn a skill which could make a world of difference to a person and their family. The course gave me confidence and I felt great knowing that I have equipped myself with the necessary skills to help out in an emergency situation.”

As well as learning an incredibly useful, life-saving skill, participating in the course is a great addition to your CV and we would like to encourage our students to look into signing up. You can view the venues and book your slot online here.
