Two Carr Hill teams entered the event hosted by Blackpool 6th Form and run in partnership with the Further Mathematics Support Programme. The students were split into a girls’ team and boys’ team. The teams took part in several different rounds throughout the day with Carr Hill pupils consistently scoring the highest number of points.

The first two rounds consisted of mathematically based puzzles and challenging problem solving tasks with students submitting their four best solutions. The boys were victorious in these rounds whilst the girls showed their natural mathematical ability in the third round when they had to produce unique mats that were coloured using only red, blue, yellow and green. Students were challenged to build a cube with these mats and make sure that the colours matched on each edge.

The competition finished with students taking part in a blockbuster themed round where they were required to put their maths skills to the test. They needed to use their answers from a previous question to be able to answer the following question and the questions got progressively harder. Once again the Carr Hill girls' team topped the leader board.

The day culminated with prizes being awarded and, on this occasion, first place went to the boys’ team who narrowly beat the girls.

Maths Teacher Mrs Potts said, “I am thrilled that our students won this competition as they were competing against 17 of the best schools from across the county. In winning this competition the students have demonstrated what a talented group of mathematicians they are.

"All the students worked extremely well as teams and they performed phenomenally – hardly dropping any marks. It was really good to see the students enjoy themselves outside a typical mathematics classroom”.
