Year 10 students talked their way into winning the local heats of The Rotary Club’s Youth Speaks Competition this week.

Carr Hill has a long standing involvement with the competition which is designed to give students experience of speaking on a public platform, formulating ideas on topical subjects and working to tight deadlines and time constraints.

Students were in teams of three comprising of a chairperson, speaker and vote of thanks.  Once the chairperson had welcomed the audience and done an introduction, the speaker was tasked with speaking on their chosen subject for six minutes before the Chairperson of invited a questioner to ask a question about the topic. The speaker then had two additional minutes in which to answer the question before the vote of thanks remarked on both the content of the speech and the response to the question.

Our Teams comprised of the follow students:

Team 1

Chair - Ben Cable

Speaker - Chloe Holding whose speech was entitled 'University?'

Vote of Thanks - Danielle Wilson

Team 2 - Won best team

Speaker - Rosie Still, speech - "Does fast food deserve its reputation?"

Vote of Thanks - Max Watson

English teacher Mr Dellow said, “The students have worked hard in their preparations and it has certainly paid off.  We are delighted to have made it through to the next round and hope we can be just as successful next time”.
