Year 12 and 13 students at Carr Hill Sixth Form Centre have been taking part in ESCAYPS (Emergency Services Community and Young Persons Safety) -a six week course based at Wesham Fire Station. Run in partnership by two local Firefighters and a Police Community Support Officer, the programme looks to provide coaching and develop traits such as teamwork, discipline and respect by encouraging self-respect and belief.

Many of the Carr Hill students who are involved have an interest in a career in Public Services so taking part in the course is a great way to gain experience and build a greater understanding of what a career in that sector could entail. The programme has been successfully running for a number of years with courses starting regularly.

Staff at the sixth form have advertised the opportunity to all sixth form students and have received a lot of interest from students wishing to get involved. Pupils on the course take part in a range of activities from hose running with the Fire Service to Police riot training.

Year 13 Rowan has taken part in the course. She said: "I'd definitely recommend getting involved. Completing the course has made me realise how much I'd like to work in the police force. I feel like I know much more about the job than before as I now have a better understanding of the sort of things police officers do on a day to day basis, how many callouts they have to attend and the variety of issues they assist with."

Post 16 Care Leader, Miss Stott, said: “As part of our enrichment offer we provide our students with opportunities to get involved in many projects such as this. We offer industry specialist advice and support for a number of career paths including teaching, medicine, public services, armed forces and engineering- giving our students the chance to build up a portfolio of experience which not only helps them to find out more about the industry which interests them but also allows them to build up experience within those industries helping them to stand out from the crowd when it matters.”
