Year 7, 8 and 9 students tried something a little different in their PE lessons this week as a national martial arts company visited the school to run taster workshops.

Instructors and coaches from Nippon UK gave students the chance to try out simple self-defence moves in a safe environment. Pupils worked in pairs to try a range of moves following the lead from the experts. Over 100 students took part in the activity over the course of a day with many having never tried martial arts before.

PE Teacher Mrs Carroll organised the activity as part of an ongoing project to introduce students to different sporting activities run by external organisations. Mrs Carroll said: “We are working with local clubs and organisations to help promote the activities on offer in the local area and encourage our students to get involved in new sports. The students had a great time taking part in the Nippon UK workshops and I would like to thank the coaches and instructors for leading such fun, engaging sessions.”
