Students were invited to attend a workshop run by English staff designed to inspire their natural creative ability. Staff used various props such as lava lamps, candles, torches and lightbulbs to help students think about what light means to them.

Pupils were encouraged to write poems which will be entered in to a school competition. Year 7 student Katie took part in the lunchtime workshop. She said: “I really like poetry and have been writing it for a while. I think the workshop has been good and the items the teachers brought in have helped me with ideas for my poem.”

Poetry is just one of the ways that students can enter the competition as they are also able to submit artwork or photography based on the same theme.

The competition closes on 30th November and the winning entries will be selected shortly after. The winners of the competition will have their designs displayed around the school for the next year.

Ms Fry is one of the teachers involved in organising the National Poetry Day workshop and the competition. She said: “We have a lot of creative students who are capable of producing some fantastic, artistic and thoughtful work. This competition has been running a number of years and we always have the pleasure of choosing from brilliant entries. We are looking forward to seeing what our students submit already.”

For more information about the competition students should speak to Ms Fry, Mrs Wild or Miss Wignall.
