To help aid their studies of the Charles Dickens novel A Christmas Carol, students sampled traditional foods including; mince pies, humbugs and liquorice; listened to Victorian music and looked at Christmas decorations from the era. The students are half way through reading the famous novel as part of the new AQA GCSE English Literature course.

Pupils will also use write a descriptive piece about a Victorian Christmas market as part of their AQA English Language course. The classroom activity was an opportunity for students to write notes which they will later use to write their expressive piece.

Year 10 Nathan said: “The Victorian Market was very interactive and I’ve really enjoyed it today.”

Fellow Year 10 Grace said: “This activity has helped us to get to know what it was like in the Victorian times. My favourite part has definitely been trying all the different foods.”

English teacher, Ms England, said: “The Victorian Christmas market was design to bring the Victorian era to life. We wanted to create a sensory experience which would help students with their study of A Christmas Carol for their English Literature course whilst also enhancing their ability to write a creative piece for their English Language course.
