Following tough auditions, dance student Maiya, will soon join other successful dancers from across Lancashire as a member of the Ludus Youth Dance Company (LYDC). Maiya will soon be working with professional choreographers and dance companies to devise, perform and tour new work.

Maiya told us about her experience of the auditions and being selected for the dance company:

“I went to formal auditions for a day and had to complete a number of technical tasks and creative pieces.  I needed to show the panel my technique, abilities and creative flare.  I was really nervous about auditioning;  I didn’t even tell anyone I was going!”

There are fifteen places available in the youth dance company, and young people from all over Lancashire auditioned to be considered.  From 60 dancers at Maiya’s audition, she was selected for one such place.

When she found out that she had secured a place she was over the moon: “I was so shocked and completely overwhelmed.  I was completely ecstatic!”

Maiya will rehearse with the company once per month and attend intensive week-long workshops that take place during school holidays.  Miss O’Connor is the coach of Carr Hill Sixth Form’s Elite Dance Academy; she said:

“I am extremely proud of what Maiya has achieved.  She works incredibly hard as part of the Dance Academy and is a great ambassador for other dance students at our school.  I’m really excited to see Maiya performing with Ludus.”

Carr Hill Elite Dance Academy provides intensive coaching and training for dancers alongside academic studies at A-Level or GCSE.   Mr Doughty (the school’s Sports Academies Officer) said “As well as professional training and coaching, The Elite Dance Academy provides a wealth of opportunities for young dancers at our school.  We’re very proud of Maiya and I am sure she be an inspiration to our other dance students.”

We’ll be catching up with Maiya regularly to find out how her training with Ludus is going.
