Four of the school’s most talented mathematicians participated in a challenge event called Maths Feast organised by the Further Mathematics Support Programme.

Pupils Sarah, Fraser, Lauren and Louis faced a series of challenges which tested mathematical, team-working and communication skills. Of the 18 schools present at the event the Carr Hill team managed to finish in an impressive 6th place.

During the challenge the team faced six rounds. Every round was named after a dinner course in keeping with the theme of the event; the Amuse-Bouche, Hors d’oeurves, Entrée, Main Course, Dessert and Petits-Fours each offered a different challenge. Students were tested on areas of mathematics including algebraic expressions, Set Theory and Venn Diagrams and inequalities.

The pupils performed well in all rounds and were pronounced the winners of the Hors d’oeurves section which involved comparison around using inequalities. The students were selected for the challenge by Maths teacher Mrs Potts because they are talented young mathematicians. Mrs Potts, who accompanied the students to the Maths Feast, said:  “I’m thrilled that our students did so well at the Maths Feast event. All four students rose to the challenge and demonstrated a high level of mathematic knowledge and understanding.”

Year 10 student Sarah has represented the school at a number of previous competitions. She said: “It was nice to be asked to be a part of the team. This competition was different to some of the others I have been to because it had interactive and traditional ways of testing.”

Fellow team member Lauren said: “The competition was fun and we worked well as a team because we all have different areas of Maths that we are good at.”

Mrs Potts added: “I think this event has boosted the confidence of all four students and I hope it encourages them to continue to learn and develop their already impressive subject knowledge.”
