Over the last 12 weeks a group of dedicated students have been attending a Saturday Maths tutorial in order to improve their Maths skills across a range of topics.

Around 20 year 7s have been attending the weekly classes and covering topics such as formulas, equations and probability. The programme requires pupils to complete 10 units and evidence of their work is displayed in their very own Maths passport. Students receive certificates once they have the passed units.

The weekly sessions are headed up by the Director of Learning for the Logic cluster Mrs Taylor, with the support of a number of Maths teachers from the cluster. Mrs Taylor said: “The Passport Maths tutorials are designed to build up students’ skills across a number of core topics within the subject. Once the basic fundamentals of these topics are understood we find that students feel a lot more confident about tackling the more challenging elements of these areas as they move up the school.

“This programme is in its second year and continues to be effective in enhancing students’ understanding of core maths topics. We’ve had a number of students who have been moved up a set at school and parents are always very supportive and encouraging of the programme.”

Year 7 student Marcus said: “The weekend lessons have been fun and really helped me improve my algebra skills.”

Fellow pupil Lauren said: “Maths wasn’t my favourite subject before but after these lessons I have enjoy it a lot more.”

Year 7 student Peter said: “The classes have made me feel more confident about asking questions when I don’t understand something.”
