A group of Sixth Form students who are passionate about history are running a lunchtime club for pupils in lower years who are interested in learning more about the subject of history.

Five year 13 students, Robert, Matthew, Miranda, Susan and Ghislaine, who all study history at A Level, are taking it in turns to deliver lessons about their favourite historical topics. The club is open to all students and takes place every Thursday lunchtime.

Most recently Sixth Form students Robert and Matthew delivered a presentation on WW1. The year 13 pupils previously travelled to a number of WW1 memorial sites and museums in Europe. The trip was a part of a Government schools initiative and Robert and Matthew were joined by  students from another 20 schools from across the North West. The pair used their photos and their experiences to present to a group of younger students; teaching them about WW1 and sharing their thoughts on the many sights they experienced.

All the Sixth Form students involved with the History Club prepare documents and learning materials on a topic of their choice. They do this in their free time and volunteer their lunch break to teach younger students. Robert, who plans to continue to study history at University, said: “The trip we took earlier this year was focused on remembrance and it really captured my interest in WW1. I knew a little about WW1 before the trip but I learnt so much more whilst I was there and I wanted to share that with other students.”

Fellow pupil Matthew, who also went on the remembrance trip, said: “History Club is a great way for students to learn more about the subject. We get to choose the topics that we cover and we all have a lot of ideas for the coming weeks. It’s fun to talk to others about things that interest you and History Club gives us the opportunity to do this.”

History teacher Miss Isherwood said: “We have been running a History Club with our Sixth Form students for a number of years and it has always been well attended. Our students are genuinely interested in learning about history and I think it is great that our Sixth Formers can share their interest in the subject with younger students, perhaps even inspire them to continue to study history throughout their time here.”

History Club takes place every Thursday lunchtime in HU3.
