Netball is a popular sport at Carr Hill High School and amongst one of four Sporting Elite Academies. Given this the school encourage interest from an early age and offer a netball training sessions for year 7 and 8 students twice a week.

The Netball Club has a turnout of around 40 students each week and is coached by PE teacher Mrs Beesley. Mrs Beesley is assisted by Netball Academy members who give up their free time to help younger students develop their skills.

Netball Academy member Amber is one of the students who helps out. She said: “I enjoy working with the younger students and helping them to become better players. We have some very talented students and I’m sure a lot of them will be future Netball Academy members.”

Fellow Netball Academy member Alice is also a regular at the training sessions. She said: “I love playing netball and it is great to share that with the younger students. I always feel proud of the students when they get something right or have worked hard to develop a new skill.”

Having spent the first term taking part in regular training sessions, which include drills and playing matches, the students will be selected to form a team. The team will then play matches against other schools from across the region, just as the Netball Academy members do.

Year 8 student Harriet has been coming to the Netball Club since she started Carr Hill High School in September 2013. She said: “I want to get into the Netball Academy one day and I know if I work hard over these next few years I will have a chance to do so. Netball Club is loads of fun and I look forward to it each week.”

Year 7 student Alice is new to the club but had played netball in primary school. She said: “I have been playing netball for a few years and it has always been one of my favourite sports. The club is a fun way to meet new people and learn new skills.”

The Netball Academy is open to all female student in year 7 and 8 and Mrs Beesley welcomes all new members. She said: “We have a real mix of abilities within the club and this shows that anyone can come along whether they have played netball before or not. We want the club to be a fun place for students; somewhere they can learn new skills whilst enjoying themselves.”

The Netball Club takes place every Tuesday and Thursday after school from 3.30pm until 4.30pm. All year 7 and 8 female students are welcome. For more information speak to Mrs Beesley.
