Carr Hill High School’s Music Department has recently launched a new club for guitar enthusiasts.

The school’s new Guitar Club is open to students of all ages and abilities and, despite only running for a few weeks the club already has a regular turnout of over 20 students for each session.

Some pupils have never played the guitar before and are using the club to learn the basics, whilst others have had some lessons in the past and are keen to start learning again. A number of students who are accomplished guitar players have also volunteered their time to help fellow pupils learn.

The club, which is run by music teachers Mr Gally and Mr Charlton, gives students the chance to use electric or acoustic guitars. Students are also encouraged to suggest songs for the rest of the group to learn. So far pupils have tried their hand at songs such as Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol and Blame it On Me by George Ezra.

Year nine pupil Poppy comes to Guitar Club with her friend Georgia. Both students are talented musicians who are keen to add to their musical ability. Poppy said: “Guitar Club is great because it gives beginners the chance to learn alongside other students and there is lots of support from the teachers.”

Year 12 student Ashley has been playing the guitar for three years and has joined Guitar Club to help other pupils. Ashely said: “I enjoy playing the guitar and having the opportunity to teach others has been a lot of fun.”

Year eight students Omar and Jack have both played guitar before but had to stop due to other commitments. Omar said: “I find guitar club very calming. It is good to have somewhere to go to chill out and play new music.”

Jack agrees and said: “It’s nice to have the opportunity to improve our guitar skills in a fun and relaxed environment.”

Mr Charlton said: “Guitar Club is becoming more popular each week and we have been impressed with the level of interest from students of all ages. Having a mixed ability class is working well as the students are helping and encouraging each other to learn.”

Guitar Club takes place every Wednesday lunchtime and all ages and abilities are welcome.
