Report by Year 11 student, and Sporting Elite Media Officer, Jack

Carr Hill High School has appointed its first Sporting Elite Media Officer.

Year 11 student Jack has been selected to be the school’s Sporting Elite Media Officer, a role dedicated to reporting on, and promoting the success of, the school’s four Sporting Elite Academies.

Jack was appointed at the end of September and is responsible for attending academy matches, training sessions and events so that the school can keep parents, carers and students up to date with the latest academy news.

Jack is a keen writer and a regular contributor to the Blackpool Gazette’s Junior Gazette section. Jack is delighted to be the new Sporting Elite Media Officer. He said: “I applied for the role as I thought it was an excellent way to improve my reporting skills. It has also been a few years since I reported on any sporting events or activities and it is something I enjoy so I wanted to pick it up again.

“I like the fact that this is a new role so I will have lots of input in developing it and making it a success. I think it is really important that we promote the academies as the students work really hard and achieve a lot on behalf of the school.”

Jack will regularly report on matches, provide the latest news on training sessions and attend sporting events. Please see below for Jack’s first rugby game match report. The Sports Academy News page within the Sports Academy News section of the website will also be updated with the latest from our Sporting Elite Media Officer so don’t forget to take a look.

Carr Hill High School’s Rugby Academy faced visiting team, Bolton Grammar School in a great match on Wednesday October 8th 2014.

Report By Sporting Elite Media Officer, Jack.

The starting line consisted of, Johnny Sandham (1), George Roylance-Moore (2), the Vice Captain, Max Moore (3), Jordan Bibby (4), Matthew Elliot (5), Rhys Phillips (6), Connor Dalgiesh (7), Will Hodgkins, the Captain (8), Kieran Oglethorpe (9), Aidan Clow (10), Sam Hogarth (12), Jobe Roxby (13), Kurtis Spence (14), Matt Bamber (11) and George Graham (15). The substitutions were, Tom Hodgkins, Jacob Egglestone, Josh Holland, Connor Williams and Tom Logan.

As soon as the first half began the Carr Hill team got straight into it. The team pulled together and demonstrated some great defending; making sure that no one got past them, in particular, Matthew Elliot, who executed a brilliant tackle to the opposing side. Minutes into the game Carr Hill player Sam Hogarth got injured and Josh Holland was subbed for him. This could have affected the team’s morale but the players maintained a high standard of play.

Throughout the first half, there was some excellent team work between the team; including Johnny Sandham, Matt Bamber and Jobe Roxby as they nearly scored the first try. Then the ball was passed to Aidan Clow, no one from the other team could get the ball of him and he scored the first try! It was a brilliant try and a great start for Carr Hill.

Although, Carr Hill needed to score, they also needed to make sure that Bolton didn’t score and Rhys Phillips and Johnny Sandham were there to make sure that didn’t happen. The team demonstrated some great techniques to make ensure that the opposing team didn’t get the ball and Max Moore, was too fast for Bolton to catch up as he powered through them. While on the side-line, coach, Mr Penney, was giving the team advice on how to do better and it really worked! Carr Hill almost scored another try when Matt Bamber came close when Kurtis Spence helped him take the ball from the opposing side.  By half time, Carr Hill were still holding the lead.

As the second half began Carr Hill got straight back in to it, battling the opposing side. The team showed great team work, always working to get the ball from the opposing side and the sure determination not to let their opponents score a try was evident. Just when the crowd thought it couldn’t get better, Jobe Roxby scored a brilliant conversion which made the score 7 – 0.

The game became tense, the other team hadn’t scored one try yet and the Carr Hill team were still in the lead. Just like the first half, they carried on with their defending and their teamwork was fantastic. In the second half, some more of the Carr Hill team players came off injured but the remaining players kept the standard of play high.

Unfortunately near the end of the match, Bolton Grammar School scored a try making the score 7 to 5. Nevertheless, the Carr Hill team didn’t let them score again and Carr Hill won the match.

What a win for Carr Hill, well done!

Following the game the Captain, Will Hodgkins, said: “Although we won the game, I thought that we could have done better. I think to improve we need to go back over the basics to get where we want to and score more tries. Having said that I think overall we did well. I thought Connor Dalgiesh and Rhys Phillips played particularly well.”

While Coach Mr Penney said: “In general the team played well. The effort and determination was definitely there and they pulled together throughout the game. We need to have more practise on the basics and also critically thinking in order to improve. The man of the match went to Johnny Sandham and Rhys Phillips, who both played an excellent game today!”
