Each year Carr Hill Sixth Form Centre hold a Freshers Fayre for students. The event offers students the chance to find out more about local, regional and national organisations. There are opportunities with charities, businesses and overseas programmes.

This year Foxes Biscuits, The Anthony Nolan Trust, Camps International and Gateway Volunteering were just a few of the external organisations to attend.  These organisations were joined by Carr Hill Sixth Form Centre groups such as The Sixth Form Committee and the Creative Writing Club. There were also opportunities for sixth form students to sign up to teach PE in local primary schools and to run classes on money management for year 7 pupils at Carr Hill High School.

Year 12 students Adam and Tom were both impressed with the event. Adam said: “Attending the Freshers Fayre has showed me how many opportunities there are to expand your horizons. There are loads of ways you can learn new things, it’s not all about what you learn through studying.

Tom was particularly interested in the Money Mentors programme. He said: “The school is giving sixth formers the chance to learn about teaching and then we have the opportunity to teach a class of younger children. I’ve signed up as I think it will be fun and a good way to learn new skills.”

Charlotte and Katie came to the Freshers Fayre as representatives from local company Foxes Biscuits. The pair came to speak to students about career opportunities within their company and the wider food industry. Charlotte said: “I think Katie and I are good examples of how you can gain employment in the food industry as one of us took an employment route and the other a university route. Today we are keen to explain to students that the food industry is not just about working in a factory there are jobs in marketing, sales distribution, buying and much more.”

Nick and Eileen also attended the event as representatives of Gateway Volunteering. Nick said: “It is so important for students to make themselves standout. Volunteering is an ideal way to get your application noticed when trying to gain employment or a place at University. We have volunteering options with over 350 organisations across the Flyde so there is something to fit the interests of all students.

“The turn out today has been fantastic and we have been impressed with the level of interest. A lot of students have signed up for more information and we hope that we have recruited some future volunteers.”

Year 12 Kayleigh is a keen volunteer with over 650 hours under her belt. Kayleigh said: “I came along to look at volunteer opportunities with Derian House and Gateways Volunteering. I was also interested to find out about ways I could help within school and have just signed up to a paired reading scheme.”

Year 13 Kieran was one of a number of students to run a stall at the event. He said: “My friends and I have set up a creative writing club for students in younger years. We started the club towards the end of last year so we saw the Freshers Fayre as a way of raising more awareness and recruiting more students to come along and help younger pupils.”
