Seven AS Level Physics students travelled to Manchester to attend an event at one of the country’s top Universities. The event was called ‘Physics One Day School’ and consisted of four back to back lectures.

Students were shown to the Shuster Building at the University and, amongst students from other schools, were given the lectures by professors at the institute.

The lectures included ‘Seeing the Universe’ which was about observing the dark side of the Universe. Car Hill students gained knowledge on what is known about what makes up the Universe including dark matter and dark energy, together with the different ways in which these little known about entities are being explored.

Another lecture was entitled ‘Evolution, Evacuation, Economics, Game theories’. This covered the physics of agent-based models – showing students how the application of physics enables solutions to complex problems in many different fields. There was also a lecture on sub atomic particles and how physics can be applied to modelling in the Universe.

A lot of the lectures were interactive and encouraged student participation. As a result Carr Hill students won two text books. Tash, who was one of the students to go along to the event, said: “It was a great opportunity to learn more about Physics but within a University setting. It allowed us to see what it would be like and what topics we might cover should we want to study Physics at University.”

Mr Cooper went along with the students. He said: “The day was both beneficial and enjoyable for the students. It is a great opportunity to show them a different learning environment and help give them an idea of what they can expect in the future. The topics covered were varied and interesting and the interactive parts of the lectures helped to engage students further.”
