Carr Hill’s A Level History students were treated to a master class in revision from a specialist educational consultant and examiner ahead of their exams later this month.

Carr Hill arranged for Mrs Bone, who has over 20 years’ experience, to deliver a targeted revision class focusing on a specific exam paper, AQA A2 the Triumph of Elizabeth I, which students will sit in the next month.

Students played interactive games in order to build confidence and highlight areas of strength as well as identifying gaps in their knowledge. Topics such as government, religion, economy, society and law were covered. The idea was to enable Carr Hill to deliver targeted revision classes which will be of the most benefit in the final few weeks before the exams.

Mrs Bone also provided pupils with an Indicative Content Revision Booklet to help them understand what they need to include in their exam answers and how and where points are awarded. Whilst they were also shown A* answers to exam questions and given help with ways to answer the synoptic question which many students struggle with in this particular exam.

History student Joe said: “I learnt where my weak points are in my knowledge which means I can spend this time working on those areas of the course which will better prepare me for the exam.”

Before leaving the session students were asked to fill in a revision pledge stating what they were going to do over the following weeks to make the most of the remaining revision time. Many students pledged that they would use the methods and items provided alongside their existing revision tools.

A Level student Courtney said: “The Indicative Content Revision Booklet we were given is going to be so useful in these last few weeks. It is very clear and explains how we can give the right sort of answers in our exams.”

History teacher Miss Isherwood said: “It was incredibly beneficial for the students to have a specialist revision session with Mrs Bones. Some of her knowledge as an examiner and experience in marking the Triumph of Elizabeth I paper has now been passed on to the students and will come in great use when they are sitting the exams.

“The session was so positive and student feedback was terrific so I intend to continue with many of the revision methods Mrs Bone demonstrated during our last few lessons.”

Mrs Bones said: “I travel to schools all over the country to deliver specialist classes and so I meet a lot of students. I must say that the Carr Hill History class were delightful. They were appreciative of the support and even though I made the work a challenge they really rose to it. I’m confident that all the students will achieve the grades they are hoping for, with the level of hard work they put in they certainly deserve to.
