We were so pleased that our Open Evening last Thursday was such a success. We had many visitors, with lots of smiling faces and only positive comments from those who chatted with staff at the event. Our students were a credit to themselves and their families, as they offered guided tours around the facilities and answered many questions from the children and their parents/carers. Head teacher Mr Waller, senior prefects and Year 7 students presented in the Hall on 3 separate occasions, and these talks were very well received.

A selection of photographs from the evening can be seen by clicking the link below, along with the winner of the Maths competition.

The Wisdom of the Maths Department

Year 6 students were invited to guess the amount of sweets in a basket during Open Evening. Guesses ranged from 98 to 1912. The students were competing with the Maths department guess. We were using the ‘Wisdom of Crowds’, this is based on the theory that the average of the guesses will be a very accurate estimate. We had over 50 students guess, the more people that guess, the more accurate the estimate based on the averages will be.

From the guesses we analysed the data and came up with the following,

Mean  Median

 534      340

The actual amount of sweets was 495. In theory, more people guessing would have improved the accuracy of the results.

However one young man proved to be very precise with his guess only three sweets away 498. Ronnie was presented with his prize of 495 sweets at his school and he quickly became very popular with all his class mates.

Congratulations and well done Ronnie!
