A group of Year 9 students have been invited to take part in a series of prestigious workshops designed to help develop crucial college level study skills.

The workshops, organised by Blackpool Sixth, give students the opportunity to work with other highly able students from different schools, exploring academically challenging material from a range of disciplines including medical science, ethics, biochemistry, history and politics. After one workshop Carr Hill students’ performance has placed them ahead of other schools taking part.

The sessions are being led by Peter Garrett, MA, a graduate of Oxford University and professional Oxford and Cambridge preparation consultant. Students have completed their first session but will take part in three further workshops over the coming weeks. The skills student have begun, and will continue, to develop include research, analysis and debating.

Assistant Headteacher Ms Allan said: “This is a great opportunity for our Year 9 students to develop key skills and understandings which will help them when it comes to studying the subjects of their choice at a higher level. The Excellence Academy is an experience which is helping young people to build confidence and raise aspirations and we are delighted to be a part of it.

“Our Year 9 students Megan, Dylan, Ethan, Harrison, Pawell, Zachary, Jennifer, Tom, Sam and Harry did a fantastic job at the first of the events. I was very proud of their performance and they certainly impressed the college who have been in touch since to commend them on their work. We look forward to the remaining sessions and I’m sure our Year 9’s will continue to do well.”
