At Carr Hill High School there are currently a number of students fasting as it is the month of Ramadan-this is an Islamic holy month during which Muslims will not eat or drink between dawn and sunset.

Year 9 Maty is one of those students and here she shares her experience:

Maty said: “Fasting is about devoting ourselves to our faith and to Allah (our god). It is also about understanding more about those who are less fortunate than we are. Between 3am and 9.15pm my family and I cannot drink or eat anything and we do this for 30 days.”

At first it is difficult, especially being around others who are eating and drinking, but you get used to it and it doesn’t bother me now when I see people eating at school or on my way home. You get into the mind-set of it and you know that your faith and your dedication to god will keep you going.”

You start fasting as a young child but work your way up to fasting from dawn to sunset which I have been doing for four years. Each evening when the sun has set we eat a date, drink water, pray, eat bread and then a meal as a family.”

If you do eat or drink something during the hours of dawn and sunset then it is common to give a meal to someone who is less fortunate like the homeless. Fasting makes me feel healthy and pure and makes me appreciate simple things so much more.”
