Students from our Dance Academy have been selected to perform at the prestigious U.Dance Festival in March.

The Academy which is made up from students in Year 11, 12 and 13 entered U.Dance festival in January and were selected out of 40 other entries to go through to the next stage performing at the Regional Festival held at The Lowry Theatre, at the end of March.

U.Dance is a national framework run by One Dance UK which helps improve and inspire dance performance opportunities for children and young people across England, through working in partnership with schools and other organisations across the country.

The piece, choreographed by Academy Director Miss O’Connor with input from the students, is called ‘Beyond the Mirror’ and is based on a Feng Shui belief that you should not sleep with a mirror at the end of your bed. It explores concepts such as disturbed sleep and hallucinations as well as being drawn in to another world on the other side of the mirror.

On the day students will spend time at The Lowry working with professional practitioners and taking part in workshops before performing their piece in the evening. Miss O’Connor said, “I was thrilled when I found out we’d been selected to go through to the regional festival. The achievement is testament to their hard work and dedication and we’re all very excited about the performance and opportunity to spend time with the professional practitioners on the day.

Student and Assistant Dance Director Eliza said, “I’m really looking forward to performing this piece again.  Technically it’s quite challenging, and allows us to perform with different interpretations and dynamic ability throughout the piece due to the changes in mood and atmosphere“.
