Staff and students were given food for thought today as Year 10 Performing Arts students performed scenes in the school yard to raise awareness about modern day persecution.

The students wrote their own monologues based on challenging topics such as racism, bullying, gender issues and immigration and performed them in the yard at break in front of their peers.

In addition to bringing these issues to the forefront, the aim of the project was also to encourage people to think about their own actions and opinions in society.  A technique called crosscutting was used, which in two or more scenes are performed on stage at the same time.

Drama teacher Miss Sheffield, said, “It was a really thought provoking project which conjured up lots of emotion around the types of persecution that goes on around us today.  It was interesting to see how the students developed their ideas, and it was a positive challenge for them to think outside of their own immediate circumstances”.
