A group of Year 9 students have used their debating skills to impress judges at the national competition held in Manchester.

Chloe, Danielle and Nathan formed the debating team whilst their peers Max and Toby helped with timekeeping and asked challenging questions from the floor. Around 30 schools took part, yet Carr Hill students performed well against tough competition winning their first two debates and coming second in their third debate. The impressive performance meant students narrowly missed out on a place in the final.

Assistant Headteacher Ms Hilton-Peet has helped coach the students over the last few weeks alongside teacher Mr Churm. Ms Hilton-Peet said: “The students were amazing ambassadors for the school and did themselves proud. Danielle was even selected to be the chair for the final debate based on her performances throughout the competition.

“In addition to competing the students also received some top tips from some of the UK's most experienced debating coaches, who were there as judges. Preparation for, and participation in, the event has increased confidence, developed teamwork skills and made the students want to take part in further competitions.”
