Carr Hill High School recently hosted the first Parents’ Evening of the 2014/2015 academic year and it was one of particular importance as Year 11 students, joined by parents and carers, met their subject teachers to talk about their progress and development in the lead up to their GCSE exams.

The evening provided an opportunity to discuss what individual students need to do to make the most of the rest of the year in order to achieve the best exam results they can. With students sitting mock GCSE exams early next year and the first reports of the school year issued recently teachers, students and parents certainly had plenty to discuss.

Teachers were also given the opportunity to talk about appropriate revision guides, give details of revision sessions and other resources to help students in the coming months.

Mrs Hopkins, who has a son in year 11, said: “I found the evening extremely useful. It’s so helpful to know where my son is up to and what we can do to help him reach his targets. We have also been able to speak to teachers in more detail about the predicted grades and how they are decided. The whole evening has given us a better understanding of what we can do to help our son over the coming months.”

Fellow parent Mrs Porter was impressed with the extra effort and support staff were providing. She said: “The teachers have been very accommodating and keen to support my son in any way they can which I appreciate a lot.”

And it wasn’t just parents who found the individual appointments with subject teachers of benefit. Year 11 student Amy said: “It was nice to hear that I’m doing well from my teachers, it is encouraging and makes me want to work hard to achieve what they think I am capable of.”

In addition to meeting subject teacher parents, carers and students also had the chance to speak to members of the Sixth Form Committee. The Year 13 students held a stall at the evening giving out information about the Sixth Form and answering any questions or queries about life as a Carr Hill Sixth Form student. Head Boy Kieran said: “We feel it is important to promote the Sixth Form to Year 11 students and raise awareness about what a great place it is to continue your education.”

Also in attendance were a number of Sixth Form students who took part in the China School Exchange last summer. The students were at the event to promote the 2015 trip to the same destination as well as a voluntary work expedition to Morocco taking place the following year.  Megan was one of the students who took part in the China School Exchange. She said: “I would tell any student thinking about going on one of these trips to just go for it. My dad told me it would be a trip of a lifetime and it was. I would definitely recommend it.”

Assistant Head Ms Hilton-Peet said: “Year 11 Parents’ Evening was well attended and feedback from parents, carers and students has been positive. This is an important time for our Year 11 students and we are keen to give each pupil the individual support and guidance they require in order to help them to reach their full potential.”
