Carr Hill’s Choir Club members showed that hard work really does pay off at last night’s school Christmas Concert.

The mixed choir, which is made up of students from Year 8 to Year 11, sang the festive classic Carol of the Bells. The students have been rehearsing the well-known carol since the beginning of November honing the challenging yet recognisable four-note ostinato motif.

Despite completing their part in the Christmas Concert the students are not resting on their laurels. Music Teacher, Miss Dawson, runs the Choir Club and is already working hard with pupils to prepare for the carol service at St Michael’s Church next week.

Miss Dawson said: “We have many talented performers amongst our students and it is a pleasure to be able to help them develop and improve. It’s great to start work on a new performance and see it come together. The students are very committed to delivering the best performance they can. They were incredibly impressive at the Christmas Concert and I’m proud of every one of them.”

Year 9 student Aaron, who is also a members of the school’s Music Academy, has been attending Choir Club since 2013. He said: “I have always loved singing and performing and being a part of Choir Club has helped me to learn a lot about things like different harmonies and pitches.”

Year 8 pupil Zach came to Carr Hill in October 2014 as a new student and soon joined Choir Club. He said: “As a new students Choir Club has been a good place to meet new friends and get to know people with similar interests to me. Our teacher Miss Dawson is fab and has taught me loads already.”

Sarah, who is in Year 10, became a member of the Choir Club to help improve her singing ability. As a flute player, working towards a Grade 8, Sarah needs to sing as part of her oral exam. She said: “Initially I joined Choir Club to help with my singing as I wasn’t that confident. Having been at Choir Club for a year I feel much better about singing and I have a great time every week.”

Miss Dawson said: “I would encourage anyone interested in singing and performing to join Choir Club. It is an ideal place to improve your skills whilst having a great time. It is a really fun club with a great atmosphere and students of all abilities are welcome.”

Choir Club takes place every Tuesday after school between 3.15pm-4.15pm. The club is open to students in Year 8, 9, 10 and 11. There is also a Choir Club for Year 7 students on a Monday from 3.15pm-4.00pm.
