Carr Hill High School students have been getting creative in honour of National Poetry Day.

Pupils spent their lunch break writing poetry using the theme ‘Remember’, which has been chosen to coincide with the World War One centenary this year. Students were asked to write a poem about a memory they have. Poems were written on a piece of circular coloured card. The poems will be mounted on large card clocks which will be displayed around the English Department over the coming weeks.

Year nine student Ellie likes writing poetry so was looking forward to the activity. She said: “I found out about this activity last week and wanted to come along as I enjoy writing poems about different things. I like to have the chance to be creative with my writing, it’s a lot of fun.”

Year 7 Leon, choose to write about his old primary school, whilst his friends Jaydn and Tom wrote about their little sister and little brother respectively. Leon said: “I liked creating something out of nowhere.” Whilst Jaydn added: “There are lots of activities like this at school and we like trying them all.”

Miss Parkinson was one of the teachers who organised the activity. She said: “I think learning about poetry is very important but in my experience a lot of children are daunted by it. Creative activities like this seem to alleviate that uncertainty and demonstrate how fun creative writing can be. Poetry is a wonderful opportunity for students to express themselves through a different medium and something many of our pupils really enjoy.”

Carr Hill High School is also running a competition inspired by the National Poetry Day theme, ‘Remember’. Students are being asked to write an inspirational poem, create a piece of meaningful art or take an insightful photo. The closing date for the competition is 14th November and more details are available from Ms Fry, Mrs Wild or Miss Wignall.
