Carr Hill High School’s Golf team will go up against the best schools in the country as they compete in the UK’s largest schools golf championship.

The Schools Knockout Competition starts at county level with teams competing against other teams within their region. The Carr Hill team successfully outplayed other local schools to win their place in the English Schools Team Championships Finals which will be held at the home of English Golf, Woodhall Spa, in Lincolnshire, on Wednesday 9th July.

Sam Daniels, Kieran Leaman and Bradley Wilson, who are all 17 years old and year 12 students, will compete against teams from 25 counties in stroke play. The Championship will be played by 18 holes of handicap stableford (full handicap allowance).

The trio, who have over a decade of golfing experience between them, are the first students to enter from Carr Hill High School. Sam said: “The competition has definitely got harder as we have progressed through the rounds. The teams become stronger and the courses tougher.

“We are expecting the final to be challenging so we have upped the amount of time we spend playing golf and we may even have a few professional lessons, which none of us have done before. We are going to be at our best for the final”

The team is coached by PE teacher Mr Matt Grady. As a fellow golfer Mr Grady provides the team with support and advice and travels with them to every round of the competition. Kieran said: “Mr Grady has given us all a lot of confidence in our ability to do well in this competition. He is with us at every hole and helps us to keep focused and positive.”

Mr Matt Grady said: “Carr Hill has not entered this competition before so to reach the final is a huge achievement. The boys are talented golfers and I have every confidence that they will do the school proud at the final in July.”

The competition is run by England Golf in partnership with the English Schools Golf Association (ESGA) and if Carr Hill do well in the competition at Woodhall Spa they could make it all the way to Europe to compete against teams across the continent.

Kieran said: “We are all looking forward to having the opportunity to play golf at one of the best courses in the country and that alone is a huge achievement for us.”
