Carr Hill has achieved its highest ever place at the Regional Heat of the UK Mathematics Trust Junior Team Mathematics Challenge 2014.

Thanks to the hard work of Chris, Jack, Sam and Sarah, who formed the school team, Carr Hill managed to finish an impressive 9th out of 31. The competition was held at Lancaster Royal Grammar School and gave students from year 8 and 9 the chance to compete against other schools from across the North West.

The competition, which is run across the whole country and combines mathematical, communication and teamwork skills, offering pupils another way to express and develop their enjoyment of Mathematics.

The Carr Hill team was selected by teachers who choose students who enjoy and excel at mathematics. Student Jack said the competition was challenging but fun. He continued:

“We all worked as a team as the challenges needed to be completed as a group of four or in pairs. We hadn’t played any of the games before so it was fun to try new ways to challenge ourselves.”

The games included cross number, a number version of crossword, and miniature relay which saw each team provide an answer to help the team next to them answer their question so that all the different schools had to work together to pass the challenge.

Maths teacher Miss Jones took the students to the competition. She said: “I’m very proud of Chris, Jack, Sam and Sarah. They are talented mathematicians and always work hard so I knew they would do well at the competition. Finishing in 9th place is a huge achievement for the students and school as it is the highest Carr Hill has ever been placed.”

Jack said: “Finishing 9th was a brilliant feeling. Knowing we were placed in the top third of schools competing in our region made us feel really happy.”
