Carr Hill students certainly showed they have creative ability as the school took part in a talent competition called School Idol.

The level and diversity of talent was impressive as a large audience watched 14 acts take to the stage. Each act was critiqued by a panel of expert judges including Harry Mondryk, former member of boy band Reconnected, chorographer to the stars Kayleigh Rawcliffe and Sally Joseph, who owns her own musical theatre company.

There were 14 acts in total and a wide variety of performances from dancers to vocal harmony groups to instrumental solos. After all the acts had performed the judges went away to deliberate and select their winner, the audience were also able to vote for their favourite, meaning two of the 14 acts would be sent through to the grand final.

The judges chose year 10 student and dancer Liam Ellis, whilst the audience voted for vocal harmony group Our Melody, which is an all-girl band made up of year 8 students Georgia, Poppy, Anna and Tansy.

Liam and Our Melody will now go up against acts from other school in a North West final. Each school that took part in the North West will have also selected two finalists. All the finalists will compete for the final prize, which is the opportunity to perform Live at The Children In Need Concert and record their winning performance in a top recording studio in London.  The prize will be sure to open the door for many more fantastic opportunities.

Liam performed an impressive freestyle dance to Chris Brown’s Beautiful People. His unique dancing style caught the judges’ attention with chorographer Kayleigh asking if Liam could teach her a few of his moves. Liam said: “I’ve never really won anything at all before; it was a big shock to be chosen as the judges’ winner. I am looking forward to the final but as I perform freestyle dance I won’t be practising a routine.”

Our Melody performed a beautiful rendition of Pink’s Perfect. Poppy played the piano and sung whilst Georgia, Anna and Tansy led the vocals. The girls were shaking following the news they had won the audience vote and could not contain their excitement about making it to the final.

Poppy said: “We feel amazing about winning. We have been practising since December, during most break and lunchtimes as well as weekends. We just can’t believe the audience chose us and we will now be going to the final.”

Judge Harry Mondryk said: “All the judges were impressed with the level of talent. It was a tough selecting a winner as it was clear all the acts had taken a lot of time working on their performances. We chose Liam as he had a fantastic stage presence alongside a natural ability to dance.”

Music teacher Miss Murnan said: “The students who took part in the talent show were simply brilliant. It was clear a lot of time and effort had gone into rehearsals and that certainly showed and paid off. The judges and audience had a wonderful evening.

“Carr Hill High decided to enter this as is it as great opportunity for our students to compete against other schools. It will help our students to gain confidence and develop their performance skills. It will also help to promote the music department in the local community and further afield.”
