Carr Hill High School’s Logic Cluster has been shinning the spotlight on Maths in a bid to help raise the profile of numeracy across the curriculum and create a positive ethos.

The fun kicked off with a student treasure hunt to mark World Maths Day. KS3 pupils spent their break and lunch time searching the school to try and answer numeracy based questions for each of the subject areas where a question was placed. Students were awarded for their efforts with a range of prizes.

Carr Hill High School staff also had their maths skills challenged with a multiple choice quiz. With prizes including a selection of Easter eggs the activity certainly brought out their competitive sides.

A few days’ later the school celebrated World Pi Day. The famous symbol “π” represents a number – the ration of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. As pi is infinite, it makes it a challenge to remember as many digits as possible.

Teachers within the cluster donned specially created Pi t-shirts which included maths related jokes about Pi. This is the first time the school has marked World Pi Day in this way but the activity got students thinking and talking about Pi in a different way.

Director of Learning for the Cluster Mrs Taylor said: “The aim of the activities was to raise the profile of maths and numeracy and get the school talking about the positives of maths. All the activities were successful in achieving this and both students and staff really enjoyed the mathematical fun.”
