Carr Hill celebrated World Book Day in style this year as pupils and staff dressed as a variety of popular literary characters. Cinderella, Willy Wonka, Sherlock Holmes and the clock from Hickory, Dickory, Dock were all spotted on campus!

World Book Day, which took place on 6th March, is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and reading. Carr Hill staff and students have been celebrating all week with a range of activities including designing bookmarks and taking part in book quizzes.  Pupils have also been invited to tell others about their favourite book on film in an X-Factor style booth.

World Book Day is the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. It is marked in over 100 countries all over the world and in its 17th year.

Head of English, Miss Fry, said: “World Book Day is a great way to promote the importance of reading in a fun and engaging way. I was really impressed with the efforts of the students; there were some very creative costumes. The costumes gave students to opportunity to talk about their favourite books with each other promoting the wide range of reading materials out there.”

In conjunction with World Book Day the school also launched the Carr Hill Readathon. This is a national event which encourages students to read in a fun way. Students don’t have to read a book, as comics, newspapers and magazines are also included in the Readathon.

Students are asked to find sponsors to support them with the funds raised being used for new reading materials for the school. There are prizes for the school who raise the most sponsorship, as well as the schools who find the most creative places to read and capture them on camera.

English teacher Miss England has helped to organise the Readthon. She said: “We have received a positive response from pupils; they are keen to get involved. The Readathon works well for students and the school as students are given an incentive to read, and rewarded for it, and  the school benefits as more literary materials can be purchased which aids our current students and students in the years to come.”
