‘THIS is a Good school” were the words used to describe Carr Hill High School & Sixth Form Centre by OFSTED in their October 2012 inspection.

Just 4 years ago it was a different story, when Ofsted considered the school to be ‘Failing’. The Royal Avenue School was visited by OFSTED during October and impressed inspectors by having “improved strongly” since the last inspection in 2009.

Inspectors noted students now leave the school “with standards which are above that usually seen”.  For example “the percentage of students achieving at least five grades A* to C, including English and Mathematics has increased each year since the previous inspection and was the best in the school’s history in 2012.”

They also felt that “students in all years are very proud of their school” and “are keen to learn”. The report goes on to state “students speak highly of the adults who work with them because, in their words, ‘We can trust the staff and they are always there for us if we need them.”

Learning and teaching is highly praised by OFSTED who found “outstanding teaching in a range of subjects across the school”, particularly in the Sixth Form, which has more than doubled in size in the last 3 years.

According to Ofsted leadership and management at the school has “a marked impact on all areas of school life”. The report singles out “the principled and inspirational leadership of the Headteacher” for praise.

Headteacher Mr Patrick Earnshaw, who has led the Kirkham-based school since January 2009, is delighted with the successful inspection.

He said: “Results in 2011 put Carr Hill in the top 14% of schools nationally, and in 2012 were even higher.  We have a very strong academic record now. We have wonderful young people at this school. Talented and hardworking adults work with them. Parents are very supportive.

“It’s been a great team effort to get this far, and we have our sights firmly set on becoming even better. Congratulations to everyone!”
