Special Educational Needs and Disability Provision

Mrs J Darkin Assistant Headteacher/SENCO

Carr Hill is an inclusive school where all pupils have access to the same ambitious curriculum and a wide range of experiences. We are committed to ensuring that every pupil with SEND receives the support they need to thrive. This means taking all necessary steps to meet the individual needs of children and young people. The guiding principle of our approach is to place the pupil and their family at the centre of everything we do.

The SEND Code of Practice

The SEND Code of Practice makes it clear that all teachers are “Teachers of SEND”. At Carr Hill, teachers make every effort to meet the needs of all children and young people in the school, however diverse these needs may be. As a result of this inclusive approach, the majority of pupils with SEND have their needs met through high-quality, universal mainstream provision

Assess – Plan – Do – Review

The SEND Code of Practice is specific in its guidance about good practice, once a potential need is found. There four types of action that are implemented to ensure that effective support is in place. This is the ‘graduated response’, and the four stages are:

Assess: the class teacher and SENCO should gather information from a range of sources and clearly analyse a child’s needs before identifying them as needing SEND support. A well-informed decision is essential in making this judgement.

Plan: the school must notify parents whenever it is decided that a child is to be provided with SEND support. In addition, advice should be sought from advisory teachers and appropriate professionals, for example, speech and language therapy and physiotherapy.

Do: strategies and advice are shared with the class or subject teacher via a pupil passport.  Each class teacher is responsible for working with the pupil on a daily basis. Where the interventions involve group or individual teaching away from the main class teacher, he/she keeps responsibility for the pupil’s progress.

Review: progress towards outcomes is reviewed regularly. The impact of the support and interventions is evaluated using assessment data, observations and feedback from all involved professionals. Based on this review, decisions are made about whether support should be continued, adapted, increased or ceased, and new outcomes and strategies are agreed where necessary.

These four steps ensure that the school adopts a graduated approach to meeting the needs of pupils with SEND. This cycle is continuously reviewed and revisited for as long as the pupil is identified as having SEND.

High Quality Teaching and Learning

Subject Leaders have carefully planned the curriculum to ensure success for all pupils, regardless of their starting point. Teachers deliver high-quality teaching and learning by adapting lessons effectively and breaking down new concepts into manageable “chunks,” supporting pupils to retain key knowledge and make progress in their learning.

Teaching staff understand the needs of all pupils with SEND and use skilled assessment to ensure every pupil is making successful progress. They are trained to support a wide range of needs, enabling pupils to thrive in a caring environment where everyone is encouraged and challenged to achieve their best.

Pupils with SEND each have a bespoke Pupil Passport, containing personalised support strategies. The information in a Pupil Passport helps teachers adapt their teaching to ensure specific needs are carefully considered when planning and delivering the curriculum.

Some pupils also receive additional support and evidence-based interventions to enhance communication, cognition, physical health, and social, emotional, and mental well-being. Effective communication with parents, carers, other professionals, and specialist services is central to determining the best ways to support pupils with SEND. Regular reviews and meetings with parents are an integral part of our provision at Carr Hill, ensuring that both parents/carers and pupils are consulted and kept fully informed of any actions taken to support the child.

Transition Support for pupils with SEND

A focus on progression is particularly important for pupils with SEND transitioning from Key Stage 2. The SENCO ensures that detailed information about vulnerable pupils and those with SEND is gathered from primary schools, with meetings arranged as needed. This enables provision to be put in place before pupils join Carr Hill, supporting a smooth transition and ensuring that the curriculum meets each pupil’s needs.

Referral Process for SEND Support at Carr Hill

Identification of Concerns:

Teaching staff identify any concerns regarding a student’s learning, behaviour, or additional needs and communicate these to the relevant Faculty Leader.

Discussion and Decision:

The Faculty Leader, in collaboration with teaching staff, discusses the concerns and determines whether a formal referral to the SENCo is necessary.

Referral to SENCo:

If appropriate, the SENCo reviews the referral, consulting with other members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) as needed.

Creation of Pupil Passport:

Following consultation, the SENCo develops a Pupil Passport for the student, outlining their specific needs, strategies, and support measures.

Parent/Carer Communication:

Parents or carers are informed of the referral, the support plan, and any next steps.
