Curriculum Intent Overview

At Carr Hill High School, our Art curriculum is designed to develop confident, independent and highly skilled artists, with drawing at the core of all learning. Students build a strong foundation in observational drawing and the formal elements, enabling them to produce highly accomplished and often hyper-realistic work. At Key Stage 3, students progressively develop their skills from basic tonal drawing and colour theory in Year 7, to more complex work exploring proportion, texture and 3D form in Year 8, before applying these skills to portraiture, mixed media and independent investigations in Year 9.

At Key Stage 4, students continue to build on this foundation through GCSE Art, Craft and Design, where they explore themes such as still life and personal projects, working across a wide range of techniques. A strong emphasis remains on drawing and painting, alongside the development of individual ideas and creative outcomes.

Alongside this technical development, students explore a wide range of creative processes including painting, mixed media, digital media and 3D work, allowing them to experiment, refine ideas and develop their own artistic style. Students are introduced to both historical and contemporary artists, developing an understanding of cultural context and using this knowledge to inform their own work. We actively encourage students to take creative risks, think independently and push boundaries.

Our lessons are fully inclusive, ensuring that all students, regardless of starting point, are supported to succeed. We are proud to be in the top 5% nationally for outcomes, with a curriculum recognised for its inclusivity, creativity and high expectations.

How the Art Curriculum Contributes to the School’s Curriculum Intent

Knowledge
Knowledge is at the heart of our curriculum. Students develop a deep understanding of drawing, the formal elements and a wide range of techniques including painting, mixed media, digital and 3D processes. They also explore the work of artists across time, gaining cultural and contextual understanding and making connections within their own work.

Vocabulary Rich
Students are equipped with a rich and ambitious artistic vocabulary, enabling them to confidently analyse, evaluate and articulate their ideas. They learn to speak and write like artists, using subject-specific terminology with accuracy and purpose.

Aspiration
Through exposure to a diverse range of artists, creative careers and high-quality outcomes, students are encouraged to aim high and see themselves within the creative industries. Our curriculum raises aspirations by showing students what is possible.

Character Building
Art develops resilience, independence and confidence. Students are encouraged to experiment, take risks and refine their work, learning to respond positively to feedback and persevere through challenges.

Love of Learning
Students develop a genuine passion for art through a curriculum that celebrates creativity, individuality and exploration. They are encouraged to enjoy the process of making, discovering and expressing ideas.

Our Aims for All Students

Reading in Art

Reading in Art supports students in developing cultural understanding and critical thinking. Students engage with artist research, contextual studies and critical writing, using subject-specific vocabulary to analyse and interpret both their own work and the work of others.

Learning Beyond the Classroom in Art

Students benefit from a range of enrichment opportunities, including  workshops with practising artists, exhibitions and open studio access. These experiences allow students to engage with the creative world beyond the classroom and further develop their skills and aspirations.
