The aims of the department are:
to engage and inspire students to see Mathematics is a subject in its own right, and that there is a sense of awe and wonder to behold within its boundaries
to ensure that each student on leaving school is numerate, has sufficient skills for the career of his/her choice, and will understand the Mathematics likely to be encountered in daily adult life.
to ensure that every student, regardless of ability, reaches his/her full potential.
Classes
Years 7 - 11
We have approximately 200 students in each year group. The students are grouped according to ability across 8 sets.
Years 12 -13
In the sixth form class sizes vary according to student options. We currently have approximately 50 students taking our A level Mathematics or Further Mathematics courses.
We currently have 6 classrooms, each equipped with projector and Promethean interactive whiteboard. We have a wide range of ICT resources including Autograph, Mathswatch and Active Teach, and we subscribe to MathsWatch, Manga High and Method Maths websites.
Extra-Curricular
The Mathematics department aims to promote a love of mathematics. In all key stages, we enter students into individual and team challenges and work closely with the local primary schools. We encourage peer support within the subject and have groups of students who support other students during and after school.
Teaching and Learning
In Mathematics we are keen to adopt an interactive approach to teaching, the aim has been to encourage independent learning and problem solving skills in the classroom and we are confident this will assist pupils in achieving their full potential. We meet regularly to plan and share ideas regarding teaching and learning.
At KS3 pupils are taught and assessed using leveled criteria. We share success criteria with pupils to enable pupils to feel empowered and understand how they may progress.
Currently, in KS4 students take the AQA GCSE, with most students being entered at the higher level.
Post-16 courses include AQA A and A/S levels in both Mathematics and Further Mathematics.
The Mathematics Department is a very strong, close-knit and successful team. We are looking for a new professional to add their talent and enthusiasm to the department.
Results for 2018:
At KS4 the A*-C result was 68%.
At KS5 100% pass rate for A-level Mathematics and 33% A*- B Further Mathematics.
