On our recent Open Evening the Maths department had many activities and challenges to complete, one of these was "Guess how many sweets are in the tub?" The idea was that visitors would use maths to come up with an answer, maybe counting all the sweeties on one side and using this to work out how many more there would be to fill the whole of the container.

Many guesses were put forward, but the closest guess was 536, with the tub actually holding 540 sweeties. Mr Myers was amazed that the guess was so close to the actual amount.

We arranged to present the winner with her prize, so Mr Myers visited Newton Bluecoats Primary School Year 6 class and was very happy to pass the huge and heavy tub to Annabelle, the worthy winner. The Year 6 class cheered with enthusiasm and the thought that Annabelle may share the sweets out with the rest of her classmates. Annabelle needed a moment to think this over, but 540 sweeties is quite a lot for one person so she reluctantly agreed.

Well done to all who took part in the competition.
