For some people, dance is simply the way in which they express themselves. Joy, sadness, loneliness, love… if you can imagine how dance would portray human emotions and stories, the Dance Academy is for you.

Aimed at developing the students technical and performance skills, the Dance Academy trains on Mondays 3:15pm – 4:15pm and during Period 5 on Wednesdays each week.

At the moment there are 15 students from Year 11 and the Sixth Form who faced an audition before gaining their place in the Academy. Members are also expected to keep up their personal fitness and have the opportunity to use school’s  fitness suite facility. The students are taught by Academy Director, Miss O’Connor, and have the chance to work with professional artists and practitioners.

The Academy is captained by Year 13 student Amy Beatham and the Vice-Captain is Year 12 student, Maiya Leeke.  All members are equipped with Academy kit which consists of a leotard, leggings, trousers, t-shirt, hooded jumper and training bag.

In addition to developing their Dance skills, the students often take part in trips to watch professional works, work with children from local primary schools and lead lower school clubs in school.  The students are encouraged to develop their leadership and coaching skills within training sessions and demonstrate this to students in our school and the wider community.

The Dance Academy are part of the group of students who bi-annually carry out a sports tour. In July 2014 the students travelled to South Africa. Along with the other three academies, the Dance Academy raised funds to help cover the costs of the once in a lifetime trip. The students had the opportunity to perform and teach dance classes to members of the community.
